Service Description
In this three-hour talk and workshop, participants will explore the world of natural color materials such as pigments, inks, and dyes. We will discuss what these materials are (animal, vegetable, and mineral), where they come from, who uses them, and how they have impacted the world historically. These overviews will include a close look at ecological practices, as well as the consequences of trade and colonization. We will discuss the work of contemporary artists who consider natural materials in their practices, share personal stories of our own interpretations of color, and participate in activities to explore how we can consider the materiality of color in our creative thinking.
